About Us

The Association of Neurology APP Fellowships (ANAF) is an association of neurology fellowship programs offering advanced training for nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs). ANAF members cooperate to share best practices concerning fellowship curriculum, professionalism, training outlines and interactions with related professional groups.
ANAF currently has 12 members from medical centers across the United States, each of which offers a one-year fellowship program in neurology for postgraduate APPs. ANAF was created to collaborate and share resources and lessons learned between our programs. We meet at least twice a year to discuss common issues and ways in which our programs can grow and be a source of support for both our trainees and our practices.
Current members of ANAF include:
- Atrium Health Neurology APP Fellowship – Charlotte, NC
- Duke Neurology APP Fellowship – Durham, NC
- Geisinger Neuroscience Advanced Practitioner Residency – Wilkes-Barre, PA
- IU Health Neuroscience Postgraduate Training Program – Indianapolis, IA
- Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences – Phoenix/Scottsdale, AZ
- Miami Neuroscience Institute Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship Program – Miami, FL
- NCC APP Fellowship Program at MetroHealth – Cleveland, OH
- Stanford Healthcare APP Fellowship Program, Inpatient Neuroscience Specialty – Stanford, CA

The Need for Neurology Training
Members of ANAF are proud to offer fellowship training in neurology for advanced practice providers to meet a growing need for neurology providers in the inpatient and outpatient setting. Primary education in the neurological sciences is lacking from most nurse practitioner and physician assistant training programs. To better prepare APPs for clinical practice in neurology, our programs have formed APP fellowships.
The purpose of our programs is to help the APP develop a background in neurological science to enable fellows to localize patients’ clinical problems, develop differential diagnoses, and understand the evaluation of neurological disorders with resultant treatment options. Although clinical competence is the primary goal of our programs, developing skills that may aid in performing clinical research or education is also important.
Clearly there are many neurology APPs with significant experience who have never completed post-graduate training and provide excellent care to their patients. Our fellowship pathway is an additional option for those APPs looking for additional training before beginning their job as a neurology APP or for those experienced APPs looking to gain additional training. The fellowship offers an opportunity to experience different areas of neurology and gauge your interest as to which among a host of specialties, centered in the clinic or the hospital, you might prefer.
