We are excited to offer fellowship training in neurology for advanced practice providers (APPs), both nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs). Primary education in the neurological sciences is lacking from most NP and PA training programs. To better prepare APPs for clinical practice in neurology, our programs have formed APP fellowships. The purpose of our programs is to help APPs develop a background in neurological sciences. This background will enable fellows to localize patients’ clinical problems, develop differential diagnoses, and understand the evaluation of neurological disorders with resultant treatment options. Additionally, although clinical competence is the primary goal of our programs, developing skills that may aid in performing clinical research or education is also important.
Our programs have formed a group called the Association of Neurology APP Fellowships (ANAF). Through this interaction we share best practices concerning fellowship curriculum, professionalism, training outlines, and interactions with related professional groups. We meet at least twice a year to discuss common issues and ways in which our programs can grow and be a source of support for both our trainees and our practices.
Clearly there are many neurology APPs with significant experience who have never completed post-graduate training and provide excellent care to their patients. Our fellowship pathway is an additional option for those APPs looking for additional training before beginning their job as a neurology APP or for those experienced APPs looking to gain additional training. The fellowship offers an opportunity to experience different areas of neurology and gauge your interest as to which among a host of specialties, centered in the clinic or the hospital, you might prefer.
